SOUND DRAMATURGY
A CHARO CALVO CONFERENCE
Charo Calvo's sound worlds are dense and rich in detail. His poetic narratives invite the listener to stroll freely in a state of awakening and surprise.

She creates musical works with a powerful sound imagery where the dramaturgy of sound is re-invented each time, highlighting moments of turmoil and emotion, driven by a certain animality and a certain spiritual reflection.

Charo Calvo will present the hypotheses of his research work in sound dramaturgy where the plasticity of the voice, his preferred material, guides and energizes the listening to the other sound materials staged.

eVanescens is an interactive audiovisual performance, a journey through different states, at the moving border between the real world and dream worlds.

Musician Todor Todor Todoroff and video artist Laura Colmenares Guerra explore hybrid, singular and disturbing territories in this work. With cellist Sigrid Vandenbogaerde, they perform live the acoustic, electroacoustic and videographic parts.

The cellist wears a set of inertial sensors on her chest, arms and hands. Each of these sensors contains an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a 3-axis magnetometer to monitor its movements.

These sensors are associated with cello sound analysis techniques (extraction of frequency, envelope, harmonic content, etc.) and gestural interfaces manipulated by the other two performers to control, in real time, the programs that transform, (re)synthesize and multiply sound and image. Combined, they increase the expressive possibilities of the instruments, make it possible to define new musical gestures and offer new writing techniques.

At the crossroads of acoustic sound and its multiple metamorphoses, in an intimate dialogue with the video image, eVanescens takes the viewer into an uncertain universe, between disturbing strangeness, lightness and an impression of weightlessness.

Thickness flows is composed for dance, video installation, piano and electronics.

"The idea of the project is multiple. It is both a look at the diversity of nature around us and its fragility as well as a work on the links that unite or not a visual, video, gestural events and musical density.

The dance faces an installation of three screens (one of which is mobile) on one of which a series of videos is projected. Projection is a set of unified individual videos, linked together by the same concern for the interplay of densities, masses and movements. These are not only the movements intrinsic to the projected image but also the movements of one of the three screens (which is movable 360 degrees), such as a partner in the danced choreography.

Music and dance do not only translate what the video image transmits as a subject but what the image conveys as a presence in order to create a new meaning. Similarly, the video installation does not illustrate what music or dance evokes, but reflects the energy, movement, density, and flows that they produce."
