Based on an early poem of Arthur Adamov, La Nuit stems from incidental music written for performances in Liège of Adamov's play Les Retrouvailles.

The music seeks to express the dreamlike and tortuous world of Adamov's poem, a world greatly influenced by Rilke.

The succession of different parts is mainly intended to create as much contrast as possible, both with regard to vocal and instrumental treatment and to style.  Although each part evoques the idea of night throuhg various climates and atmospheres, they all are directed towards what one might call a certain poetic lyricism.

The second part of the piece, 7 cases violées, for solo bass clarinet, can also be performed on its own in concert.
